Perth runs on gas
The reticulated natural gas network covers most of the established metropolitan area, and that has shaped how Perth houses are built and heated. Gas storage and continuous flow hot water dominate on connected streets because the running cost sits well below resistance electric. Gas cooktops are the default in most kitchens. Gas bayonets for space heating are common in older homes.
Coverage is not universal. Parts of the outer north, some newer estates and most rural-residential blocks are not reticulated, and those properties run bottled LPG or go all-electric. Before planning anything around gas, open the meter box and confirm what is actually there.
Load is the constraint people forget
A gas installation is sized. The meter, the regulator and the service line together can deliver a certain amount of gas, and every appliance draws its share. Adding a 26 litre-per-minute continuous flow unit to a house that already has a cooktop, an oven and two bayonets can exceed what the existing installation was sized for.
The fix is not complicated — an upsized meter or service, or a larger supply line — but it is a cost and it needs establishing before the appliance is bought, not after it is sitting in the driveway.
Sizing, routing and the practical stuff
Gas lines want short runs, minimal fittings and sensible protection. Long runs of undersized pipe cause pressure drop that shows as an appliance that will not reach output. Outdoor pipework near the coast corrodes, so in suburbs like Scarborough and Fremantle the material and the protection matter more than they do five kilometres inland.
Where a run has to pass through a wall, under a floor or through a roof space, it needs sleeving and support. Where it emerges outside, it needs to be somewhere a reversing car will not find it.
Paperwork
After gas work you should receive compliance documentation for the installation. Keep it with the appliance manuals. It matters for warranty, for insurance, and for the next person who works on the system.

Do not book a job. Turn off the appliance, turn off the gas at the meter if you can reach it safely, open doors and windows, do not operate electrical switches, and get outside if the smell is strong. Then read the gas leak page and call.

Frequently asked questions
Does gas work in WA have to be done by a licensed gas fitter?
Yes. Western Australia regulates gas fitting separately from plumbing, and gas work must be carried out by a person holding a current gas fitting authorisation. A plumbing licence on its own does not permit gas work. Ask to see the authorisation and keep the compliance paperwork issued for the job.
Can I run a new gas point to my patio or kitchen?
Usually yes, if the existing supply and meter can carry the extra load. The two things that decide it are the total connected appliance load against what the meter and service line can deliver, and a practical route for the new line. A patio bayonet for a barbecue is a common and straightforward job on a mains gas property.
How do I know whether I have natural gas or LPG?
Look in the meter box. A natural gas meter is a fixed installation connected to a service line from the street. LPG is bottles, usually two 45 kilogram cylinders against an external wall with a changeover regulator. The appliances are different and are not interchangeable without a conversion kit, so this matters before buying anything.
Can you convert an appliance from natural gas to LPG?
Some appliances can be converted with a manufacturer's kit that changes the injectors and adjusts the regulator, and some cannot. It is appliance-specific and must be done by a licensed gas fitter, then tested. Running an appliance on the wrong gas without conversion is genuinely dangerous, not merely inefficient.
